Non-invasive treatment EECP (Enhanced External Counter-Pulsation) can be defined as a treatment procedure to cure Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) patients who also have angina pectoris. 

The treatment is performed through an electronically controllable air pressure valve attached to the patient’s calves, thighs, and bottom. Now the sequential inflation & deflation of the valves creates blood flow pressure in the body result to stimulate the blood supply of heart. The advantages of this therapy are as follows:

  • Acute Endothelial Function: 

 

It is generally referred to as the direct effect of this treatment. These effects of EECP on endothelial in both brachial& femoral arteries using the Flow-Mediated Dilation (FMD) have been assessed immediately after a single session therapy of EECP. The acute EECP treatment creates two opposite blood flow patterns-

  1. Ante-grade flow in the brachial artery.
  2. Retrograde flow in the femoral artery. 

During this treatment, the stress in the brachial & femoral artery increase by 71% & 402% respectively. 

As per the above details, it is clear that whether ante-grade in the arms or retrograde in the legs, both cases, improve endothelium-dependent arterial vasodilation in muscular conduit arteries. 

 

 

  • Flow Mediated Dilation (FMD): 

 

EECP therapy relieves brachial artery FMD by 51% and percent change in dilation. It also cures absolute femoral artery FMD by 39% and percentage change in dilation. 

 

 

  • Cure Arterial Stiffness:

 

Arterial stiffness is growing and recognized as a substitute end for cardiovascular disease. Aortic stiffness or aortic Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) is a strong reason for future cardiovascular events. Aorta function can be changed indirectly by lowering mean arterial pressure & reflection. Brachial & femoral artery can be modified actively by changes in endothelial function and vascular smooth muscle. It is seen that EECP can reduce central & peripheral arterial stiffness in patients with CAD.

 

Conclusion: 

Though this technology introduced in early 1950, still more technical advancement & modification is going on with the growing time. This non-surgical procedure is growing popular day by day.
